  • Is the MSI Codex R2 worth it for 1080p gaming? My laptop’s dying, and I need something compact for my small desk.

I’ve had it for a few months. Runs most games like Apex and Cyberpunk smoothly, but it gets pretty loud under load. Also, the 512GB SSD fills up fast.

  • @GREG20 h

Yeah, that SSD is tiny. I’d probably need an external drive for my games. How’s the RTX 4060? Good for high settings?

At 1080p, it’s great. Handles high settings easily, but don’t expect much from ray tracing without tweaking settings.

  • @GREG20 h

What about cooling? I’m worried about heat since it’s a compact case

  • humm, that’s where it struggles. You might want to look at the Dell G5 instead—better airflow, and still compact.

truuue, but the MSI looks better and takes up less space. If you can handle a bit of noise, it’s solid, period.

  • @GREG20 h

Got it! Noise I can handle, running out of desk space? Not so much lol

  • thanks yallll

Highlights and Advantages

  • Compact and powerful design, ideal for smaller spaces.
  • Equipped with a capable RTX 4060 GPU for smooth gaming performance.
  • Utilizes an Intel i5 processor, ensuring sufficient processing power for various tasks.

Similares

  • HP Omen 30L: Generally offers more upgradeability options compared to the MSI Codex R2.
  • Dell G5: May provide better cooling performance for sustained high-intensity gaming sessions.
  • ASUS ROG Strix G15: Often features a higher-refresh-rate display for a smoother visual experience.

What You Need to Know Before Buying

Before purchasing a mini-gaming desktop like the MSI Codex R2, consider the following technical aspects:

  • Connectivity: Ensure the available ports (USB, HDMI, etc.) meet your needs for peripherals and displays. Check the number and type of ports carefully, as mini-desktops sometimes have limited connectivity compared to larger towers.
  • Storage: Evaluate the included storage capacity (SSD size) and determine if it's sufficient for your games and files. Consider the possibility of adding extra storage if necessary, and check if that's even feasible.
  • Upgradability: Assess the ease of upgrading components like RAM or storage. Mini-desktops often have limited upgrade options compared to standard-sized towers. Check the specific upgrade paths supported by this model.
  • Power Consumption: Check the power supply wattage to ensure it's adequate for your expected usage and potential future upgrades.

Extra Tips

  1. Read user reviews from multiple sources before making your decision to get an unbiased perspective on performance and potential issues.
  2. Compare the specifications of the MSI Codex R2 to other mini-gaming PCs within a similar price range.
  3. Consider the software included with the system. Check if you'll find the pre-installed software useful, or if it's something you'd rather uninstall.
  4. Ensure the desktop's dimensions will fit comfortably in your desired location.
  5. Verify the warranty and return policy provided by the MSI-US Official Store.
